Join me on Pine Island, Florida, as we tour an incredible 1.5-acre tropical fruit tree property with longtime grower Dan. Note: This video was filmed back in March 2025, but I’m finally getting around to uploading it now. A lot may have changed on the property since then, but I still wanted to share this tour because there’s so much great information about growing tropical fruit trees, hurricane recovery, and learning what works in Pine Island. Growing fruit in this part of Florida isn't always easy. Hurricane Ian destroyed more than half of Dan's trees, Hurricane Milton took out even more, and severe flooding wiped out jackfruit and avocado trees. But instead of giving up, Dan replanted, experimented, grafted and learned which tropical fruit trees could handle these extreme South Florida conditions. During this tropical fruit tree tour, we look at an amazing collection of mango trees and other tropical and subtropical fruit, including Pickering, Orange Sherbet, Super Alphonso, Sugarloaf, M4, Valencia Pride, Buttercream, Lemon Zest, Sweet Tart, Phoenix, Orange Essence and many more. We also look at sapodilla, avocado, jackfruit, breadfruit, bananas, guava, Surinam cherry, citrus, yerba mate, pineapple, passion fruit and Dan's vegetable garden. One of the most interesting parts of this tour is seeing what survived the hurricanes, flooding, salt and cold—and what didn't. Dan even shares how he once planted Pickering mango trees about four feet apart and created a mango hedge that produced hundreds of mangoes! What are the rarest fruits in the world? Rare fruit collector and grower Stephen Murray takes us on an incredible journey through exotic fruits from around the globe. This lecture was filmed at the 2026 Florida Fruit Festival in West Palm Beach, Florida. Stephen has traveled extensively searching for unusual fruit and has built an extraordinary collection of rare and exotic species. In this presentation, he shares fruits from Brazil, Australia, Africa, Asia, South America and beyond—including varieties most people have probably never seen. You'll discover jaboticabas, Surinam cherries, Eugenias, guavas, grumichamas, Cherry of the Rio Grande, lilly pillies, pineapple guavas, native fruits, wild berries, unusual tropical fruits and much more. Stephen discusses the incredible diversity found within individual fruit species and how he selects and breeds better varieties. You'll also learn why rare-fruit preservation matters. Stephen discusses myrtle rust, a disease he says is threatening native Myrtaceae species and potentially causing unique fruit genetics to disappear. This presentation isn't only about collecting fruit. It's about finding, growing, selecting and preserving fruit genetics that could potentially become important crops in the future. Stephen is also actively selecting plants for improved fruit. He explains how he propagates from lilly pillies producing larger fruits in hopes of developing better varieties for fruit production. Some of the fruits discussed are already hiding in plain sight. Stephen explains that certain plants commonly used for landscaping have edible fruit that many people no longer realize can be eaten. Take a tour through my South Florida tropical fruit garden to see what fruit is in season in August and what's coming next! Mango season may be winding down, but that doesn't mean fruit season is over. In this video, I show you what's producing now in the West Palm Beach/Lake Worth area and explain why understanding fruiting seasons is so important when choosing which tropical fruit trees to plant. We look at late-season mangoes, white sapote, star fruit (carambola), mamey sapote, sapodilla, jackfruit, avocado, miracle fruit, mulberry, jujube, persimmon and more. One of my main goals when planting fruit trees is to choose varieties strategically so I don't have everything ripening at the same time. I want fresh fruit coming from the yard throughout as much of the year as possible. If you're growing mulberry trees, this may be the best planting method I've ever seen. During my visit to Miami Fruit (https://miamifruit.org/) , Rain showed me his espalier trellis system for growing mulberries, and I immediately realized how practical it is. Instead of allowing mulberry trees to become massive and difficult to harvest, he trains them onto a trellis where every branch is easy to reach, easy to prune, and produces an incredible amount of fruit. If someone told me I could only grow three mango trees, these are the ones I would choose. After growing many different mango varieties over the years, I've learned that taste is only one part of choosing the right mango tree. Tree size, disease resistance, productivity, harvest season, and how well the fruit performs year after year are just as important.
